Deep-Fit College Admissions Counseling
Guidance from experienced university professors and deans
Students who engage in a structured process of self-discovery and intellectual growth develop authentic, competitive college applications — and earn admission to institutions where they will not only succeed academically but truly thrive.
This perspective is reflected in a Carnegie Mellon University feature on three common ways families misunderstand college fit.
Through personalized advising, we guide students through a thoughtful, bespoke college search process grounded in our Deep-Fit™ admissions approach — one that deepens self-understanding and equips students to articulate both what they will contribute to a campus community and how they will grow through meaningful engagement within it.
How Deep-Fit Works
Deep-Fit applications begin long before essays are written.
Self-Discovery and Intellectual Inquiry
We guide students through a structured process of reflection and inquiry — using targeted assessments, major and career exploration tools, and our homegrown Passion Discovery Workbook to help them better understand their intellectual strengths, emerging interests, and areas of sustained curiosity. We support students in developing and acting on these interests in ways that deepen engagement and self-knowledge over time. At the same time, we guide students in examining the features of colleges and universities so they can clarify what they seek and value in a college environment.
Building a True Deep-Fit College List
Based on the insights gained through this work, we handcraft a customized college list of institutions that have the potential to be true Deep-Fit environments: places where a student is likely to experience academic engagement, belonging, mentorship, and the transformative opportunities that shape success after college.
We then teach students how to research these institutions deeply and intentionally. They move from “liking” a college to understanding it — its priorities, values, and academic and community ecosystem — so that application choices are made with clarity and purpose.
From Reflection to Application Strategy
From this dual reflection — on self and on school — students are positioned to submit Deep-Fit applications that demonstrate to admissions committees not only who they are, but why they are prepared to thrive at that particular institution. We support this work through disciplined essay development and strategic application execution.
Our Engagement Philosophy
Lantern College Counseling is intentionally small and high-touch. We partner with a limited number of families each year to preserve the depth, responsiveness, and individualized attention that define our work. Our engagements are designed to support students across the full arc of high school — evolving as students grow and applications take shape.

How Early Will We Start?
While many students begin in 11th grade, starting earlier allows more time for thoughtful planning around key elements of a strong college application—strategic course selection, testing timelines, summer activities, and college visits. Early engagement also creates space for mentorship, exploration, and the development of a trusted relationship that deepens over time. We help students clarify their interests and provide tailored recommendations for extracurricular involvement, summer experiences, and enrichment opportunities.
How Frequently Will We Meet?
In the early high school years, we typically meet once per quarter, with additional sessions as needed. Meetings become monthly in junior year and increase to weekly during the fall of senior year as applications are finalized. After each meeting, we provide personalized follow-up and share key deadlines, planning guidance, and timely insights about the admissions landscape. Our advising continues through final college decisions, including waitlist support if needed.
For students seeking support after enrollment, we also offer College Success Coaching, helping students navigate the transition to college and build academic and personal momentum throughout their undergraduate years.
If you’re exploring thoughtful, high-touch guidance for your student’s college search and application process, we invite you to start the conversation.
