College Academic Crisis Support: Academic Probation, Dismissal, Leave of Absence & Recovery
Guidance for families navigating serious academic challenges during the college years
When a student faces academic probation, required withdrawal, dismissal, or a leave of absence, families often feel overwhelmed and uncertain about what to do next. These situations can unfold quickly, and the institutional processes surrounding them are rarely transparent to students or parents.
Drawing on decades of experience as university professors, advisors, and deans at Harvard University, Wellesley College, and Tufts University, including leadership on Tufts University’s Mental Health Task Force, we help families understand how colleges evaluate academic standing and leaves of absence, support academic recovery, and how students can respond constructively when challenges arise.
Whether a student is working to recover academically at their current institution, preparing an appeal, considering a leave of absence, or exploring a transfer after academic difficulty, we provide informed, steady guidance during moments when clarity and institutional insight matter most.
This work is part of our Deep-Fit™ Framework, which views college not as a single admissions outcome but as a longer process of growth, adjustment, and direction-finding. Academic difficulty, leaves of absence, transfers, and recovery are often turning points in a student’s development, and with the right guidance, many students go on to thrive after an initial setback.
For a deeper explanation of how these situations unfold and how families can respond constructively, see our guide: When College Doesn’t Go as Planned: How to Help Your Student Recover and Thrive.
Our work with students and families spans college admissions counseling, college success coaching, and college crisis support. Learn more about our full range of college counseling services.
How We Help Students Navigate Academic Crises
Families navigating academic probation, dismissal, or a required leave of absence are often forced to make important decisions under significant stress and time pressure. Institutional policies can be complex, and the stakes can feel very high.
Our guidance in these situations is based on decades of experience inside universities as professors, advisors, and deans. Having overseen these processes directly, we understand how academic standing decisions are made, how appeals are evaluated, and what institutions look for when students seek to regain good standing.
We help families step back, assess the situation clearly, and develop a thoughtful path forward.
Support may include:
Careful review of the student’s academic history and institutional standing
Guidance on communication with advisors, deans, academic committees, and relevant university offices
Strategy for academic appeals or reinstatement requests
Planning for a leave of absence and preparation for a successful return
Development of an academic recovery plan
Evaluation of transfer pathways if a new institutional start becomes the best option
Our goal is to resolve the immediate crisis and help students regain stability, confidence, and a constructive academic path forward.
In many cases, once the immediate situation has been stabilized, students continue working with us through College Success Coaching to rebuild academic momentum, clarify direction, and plan next steps.
Academic Crisis Support Pathways
Every academic situation is different. Some families reach out when concerns first emerge, while others seek guidance after a student has already been placed on probation, asked to take a leave, or dismissed from the institution.
We offer three forms of support depending on the complexity and urgency of the situation.
-
Focused guidance for families navigating an urgent academic situation | $500 per hour

-
Sustained guidance for students working to regain stability and rebuild academic momentum | $500 per hour
Some situations require longer-term planning and support. In these cases, we work with students and families over time to develop a constructive path forward.

Academic recovery strategy and study planning
Guidance on institutional processes and communication
Preparation of appeal or reinstatement materials
Evaluation of transfer pathways, if needed
Planning for a successful re-entry into college
Our goal is to help students move beyond the immediate crisis and regain confidence, direction, and academic stability.
-
Integrated transfer admissions counseling and academic recovery planning | 10 hours | $4,000
For some students, the most constructive path forward after academic disruption involves transferring to a new institution as part of a thoughtful academic recovery plan. Successful transfer in these circumstances requires rebuilding academic momentum, demonstrating readiness, and developing a clear plan for sustained success after enrollment, in addition to preparing college applications.
Lantern’s Strategic Transfer Pathway integrates transfer admissions counseling with college success coaching to support students rebuilding after academic setbacks and preparing for a fresh start.
